Fallen by Lauren Kate Book Review
I really enjoyed the way she wrote this book. The cover lured me in with it’s dark and mysterious look, and I might not have bought the book if it wasn’t for the uniqueness of it. Fallen begins with a quote:
But paradise is locked and bolted….
We must make a journey around the world
to see if a back door has perhaps been left open.
–Heinrich von Kleist, “On the Puppet Theater“
Lucinda Price had just been transferred from Dover Prep School to Sword & Cross, a reform school. Lucinda, also known as Luce, was sent to Sword & Cross by court order after an incident that left Luce alive, and a boy engulfed in flames, then suddenly dieing. She sees what she calls shadows.
Luce arrives late to her first day at her new school. There are three other new students besides Luce: Cam, who kept staring at Luce; a boy with brown hair and brown eyes named Todd; and Gabbe, who Luce describes as “Neutrogena-commercial pretty”. Lucinda was also debating whether the guide, Randy, that was giving instructions on “Meds, beds, and reds.” was a woman or man. She later decided that Randy was a woman.
Once everyone had put their “prohibited materials” into a box, Randy allowed them to go to their dorms. Along her way, Luce met Arriane. Arriane is a slender, dark haired girl. After a short conversation, Luce cuts Arriane’s hair to look like her own. They walk into a sitting area where all of the Sword & Cross students are socializing. Luce studied the different people who all wore the same dress-code clothes, but she knows they all have one thing in common; a rough past. She stops her gaze onto a “very attractive dress code violation.” His name is Daniel Grigori.
Daniel ignores Luce, saying it’s for her own safety. Meanwhile, Cam is trying to get closer to Luce. Daniel and Cam seem to be on the opposite sides of everything throughout the whole story. But both Daniel and Cam share one secret..
I won’t give away anymore, just in case you haven’t read the book. Personally, I loved all of the characters. It was easy to connect with Luce; her emotions were written out clearly and beautifully. The setting of the book was also easy for me to picture. Overall, Fallen is a wonderful book that I would recommend to anyone who likes a dark, science fiction novel.

It’s a good book. All her books are good. I’m a big fan of Lauren Kate and would like to see movies of her stuff. I’m so over Twilight and the way it’s been dragged out forever.

I think a Fallen movie would be great, and it’d be interesting to see who they would pick for the cast.
