Bree Tanner CoverThe Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner by Stephenie Meyer follows the brief existence of the newborn vampire, Bree Tanner. This is an Eclipse novella, so if you’re familiar with The Twilight Saga, you should know the story surrounding this one.

Stephenie Meyer takes you into the life of a newborn, human-blood drinking vampire, which isn’t seen in any of the other Twilight books. Here’s how it begins..

Bree is reading a newspaper headline saying: “Seattle Under Siege–Death Toll Rises Again”. Of course, the cause of death isn’t natural; it’s because of all the reckless, newly-made vampires wandering around the city looking for their next meal. Bree goes on to say that she’ll make sure she’s out of the way when her creator, Riley, reads this headline. Bree doesn’t like or trust Riley, though he got her out of her abusive home life, he brought her into the deadly world of vampires.

Bree is hunting with three other vampires: Kevin, Diego, and ‘the blonde kid’. Kevin and the blonde kid are imitating their favorite super heroes; climbing the side of near-by buildings, and then stepping on to the road right in front of an oncoming car. Kevin grabs the car as it tries to stop, and throws it up and over his head. He and the blonde kid fight over the human girl inside. Bree can smell her blood, which makes her throat burn. She sees Diego flee from the scene and follows him. They jump over buildings until they can’t smell the human’s blood anymore. Diego stops, and Bree considers what he’s going to do until she realizes they stopped on a roof above three humans.

After killing the humans, Bree and Diego talk about her (Victoria) and they ponder on why she had Riley create them. As they were talking, they didn’t realize how much time had gone by, and that the sun was about to rise (Riley told all of the newborns the sun burns them). Diego brings Bree to an underwater cave to get out of the sunlight. When they get there the tide is low, so it’s not fully underwater. In this confined space, they talk to each other about something that’s rarely talked about: their human lives.

Diego talks about how his brother was killed by gang members, and they were about to kill him when Riley showed up, saying ‘Want a new life, kid?’. Whereas for Bree, she ran away from home, and Riley asked her; ‘Want a burger, kid?’. She calls the burger ‘the cheeseburger of pain’.

Diego and Bree dig to the surface, discovering that they don’t burn in the sun, they ‘sparkle’. Diego decides he will ask Riley if he knows about this, and Bree will stay behind with the rest of the group. When Diego goes to ask Riley about the sun, they hear Riley and her talking about an enemy and Riley’s ‘army’. The next few days, Riley prepares the group of vampires and tells them about the ‘yellow eyes’ (Cullens) and their human pet (Bella).

On the day that they go to fight, Riley brings them all out into the sun, saying it was a special day. Bree is worried; Riley came back, but Diego didn’t. Riley states that Diego will meet them on the battlefield: he never comes. All of the newborns except Bree and Fred (he ran away) die until the Volturi come, and see that the Cullens have spared Bree. Right before one of the Volturi guard kills Bree, she thinks of all the things that happened with Riley because she knows one of the Cullens is a mind reader.

  1. I wish Bree was in the movie longer. I think it would have been a good character to build on when the saga has ended.

  2. I agree. Maybe there will be a short film based on the book…I’d definitely watch it.

  3. I am not a big reader very often so I like the movies but there is no movie for this that I can find. It’s why I am here. I did try reading the book but SM writing seems hard to read for me.

  4. I love movies as much as I love books, so if I read a book that has been made into a movie, I’ll normally watch it.

  5. Love Lauren Kate too but I dont see any of her books reviewed here. Bummer. Cant stand the whole twilight thing anymore so sorry for posting it in a twilight topic. Love ur music!

  6. I’ve read Lauren Kate’s Fallen Series, so I’ll be doing reviews on those soon.

  7. i saw some really cool kristen stewart pics today of a new photo shoot for w magazine. it hardly looks like her dressed in fur and a big hairdo. and i wish bree was in more movies too even though she seems a little bit creepy.

  8. I checked out the cover, and I agree, she looks so much different. Bree is a good character, and I’m glad Stephenie Meyer decided to do a novella in her point of view.
